The Mayan City
Quirigua is located in the Montagua River Valley; brought
to light thanks to the articles published by the press
due to the visit of John Stephens and Frederick Catherwood
to the Mayan City. This trip came to be from the relationship
of their work “Incidentes de Viaje en Centro America
Chiapas & Yucatan” in which the drawings of
the stelaes E & F were published. Stephens took advantage
of the situation to negotiate the Ruins of Quirigua with
the at the time owner’s children (the name is unknown).
Later it became
property of the Unite Fruit Company, who deforested almost
the entire property to produce plantain and banana, being
1910 it and recognized as an archaeological Park, the
same 74 acres have to be preserved to perpetuity including
the woodland areas.

Their
acme developed between the years of 550 and 850 A.D. during which
existed a rivalry with the neighbouring Copan, Subjecting it in
the year 738 A.D. During these years, the majority of the structure
and stelaes were erected in the site of which stelae E stands
out with a height of about 11mts, which, by the way represents
Cauak Cielo the Governor of Quirigua.
Declared a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1973, is of great
relevance to the conservation so it is relevant to prepare the
visitor for their encounter with a glorious past. This is why
many attempts to impel a visitors centre, in which an area of
150.90mts2 was developed with the purpose to graphically expose
the history and discovery of the Mayan City. This way the visitors
