The
biggest town that surround the lake, is Panajachel, located
in a wide river outlet in the north banks of the lake.
It has hotels, restaurants, art galleries, crafts stores
and other comertial areas. In spite of tourism infulence,
the indigenous still live in small adobe shacks and cultivate
their vegetables. Sunday is the plaza day, but the main
street market is also very converged on Saturdays.

West of Panajachel,
is the valley of San Buenaventura, historical place of
the Lake basin, in which a natural reserve of 120 hectares
and a mariposario. The forest has several paths, cascades
and an organic cafeteria

The
complete name is San Francisco Panajachel. A precolubian town
of kakchiquel origin, was the scenario of the final battle between
Spaniards and their allies the kakchiqueles, against the tzutujiles;
furthermore, it wasthe esablishmet of the Franciscan missionaries'
who founded a convent.
At
the moment the town is located amid coffee plantations, gardens
and vegetable parcels. It is the most important tourist center
in the area, for the reason that it concentrates most of hotels,
restaurants, discos, amusement centers and comertial centers.
It is ideal to go shopping for handmade articles.
