Lake Atitlan

Lake Atitlan, called the most beautiful lake in the world is surrounded by three volcanoes, the San Pedro (2995), Tolimán (3158) and Atitlán (3537). The Lake has 18 kilometres long and 13 kilometres wide with depths of up to 341 meters and with a total surface of 130 squared kilometres.

More than 85 thousand years ago, a volcanic eruption erased all traces of life from the south of Mexico to Costa Rica, leaving an immense crater. As time went by, the water accumulated in the boiler and completely closed the flows of lava of the new volcanoes.

According to old chroniccles, the town Tzutujil settled in the south banks of the lake toward the year 1250 A. D.. Near Santiago Atitlan, you can apreciate the ruins of Chuitiamit, old capital of the Kingdom.

The Quichés and Cakchiqueles were alies up to 1470 untill a bloody war motivated the rivalry between them, as a reasult the Cakchiqueles united with the Spaniards in 1523.
